review 1: I enjoyed this book far more than I expected. It was a sad story about a kid who had it tough and just couldn't seem to get a break. He had a hot temper, a sister he lived dearly, and a determination to prove himself. I appreciated the way the book was written very "matter-of-factly. What I really liked about this book is how the author took real feelings and immersed them into "real-life." No fluff. I was able to stay intrigued throughout the whole book.
review 2: Really liked it until about 1/2 way through when the continued awfulness just got to be too much, though probably realistic. Main characters suffer loss of property, loss of almost their entire family, starvation, small pox, wolves, human cruelty, trail tragedies. The point I lost interest is w
... morehen all of this breaks the main characters. So discouraging to see them come so far only to loose all optimism and goodness in character. Wish the end result had made the journey more worthwhile. less

Perhaps I just don't like westerns, but this book did absolutely nothing for me.
