review 1: I always enjoy reading about "what happens after" the HEA. So thanks to Ms Vane's friend here on Goodreads for the suggestion. It's Diana's 9th month of pregnancy and it's been 8 days since she and Ludovic last made love. Due to coincidences, she began to doubt her husband after accidentally reading a missive from Salime. It's because of doctor's orders that Ludovic abstained from making love with his wife. When it comes to pregnant woman, hormones are on high and one cannot blame how one perceives things. This short story provides a gateway, the perfect in-between novel to the author's next novel "Jewel of the East". New characters surface and I can't help but be curious and eager to read about the next. The love scene was written so well it isn't about satisfying carnal ... morecravings, but establishing solid trust between them, it is the only love scene but it was really significant.
review 2: Oho! And yet again, I got to visit with two of my favorite characters to see how things are fairing for them after the Happily Ever After. I know that fans of the series will not be surprised when I share that these two are still hotter than sin in their passion for each other, but still have a few more hurdles to cross toward marital felicity. The story picks up when Diana is nearing the end of her pregnancy. She worries over the new aloofness of DeVere thinking that he is bored with her or worse, that he's ready to move on. Has the rake really reformed she wonders. DeVere on the other hand is following the doctor's orders not to engage in marital relations until well after the baby arrived. Between worry about Diana making it through the birth of their child and the frustration of forced abstinence he doesn't know how he'll make it the next several weeks. Then the letter from Salime requesting his help arrives and on its heels Ned enters with news that their old friend Simon, whom they thought killed in the war, is alive, but in a bad way. DeVere leaves with Ned to aid with Simon, but in his absence Diana finds the letter from his former mistress. That's when things get really interesting. As can be surmised, mistrust and lack of communication cause no end of trouble and test the love between this pair of lovers. There is a deep sensuality shared by these two that absolutely scorches the pages. I should add a warning to those who are uneasy with it that there is an intense dramatic scene involving anal sex. Besides the misunderstanding and the passion that this story offers, there is also the set up for Salime and Simon's stories. It was pleasant revisiting briefly with Ned.I enjoyed this shorter bridge in the serial and recommend it to fans of the series. For those who haven't read the series, this should be read in series order for it to be appreciated. As to the series, those who enjoy historical erotica or steamy historical romances will appreciate these stories. My thanks to the author for providing a copy of the story in exchange for an honest review. less
