review 1: This book was so great! It follows the Devil Devere series, but takes a detour to introduce us to some of the characters from the other stories, when the characters met. This story takes us back to when Ludovic, Ned and Simon (also known as Sin) are in school. They get into all sorts of trouble from talking in class to writing indecent limericks. As punishment, one is whipped in front of the class while they all look on. In retribution, Ludovic decides to get even. They are somehow able to find a lion from the King's animals, drug it, get it back to the school, at that point, the sun was coming up and they didn't know what to do. Sin and the lion tamer named Freddie were keeping watch, so Ned and Ludovic put the lion in Sin's room! As a result, they were kicked out o... moref school. Ludovic Devere must go home and face his father who is out of his mind from STD. This story is about Devere and who he is after his expulsion. I really enjoyed reading the back story of who he is and how he came to be who he is!
review 2: This aptly titled book gives us a little history of our beloved Devil DeVere. It's amusing to read about the young Vic and Ned, with their friend Simon (Sin) wreaking havoc early on. He didn't have the usual upbringing but his parents' sins followed him wherever he went. It was a surprising reunion in Paris though. It answered a lot of questions about how he came to the title with his sire still alive, the incident about the lion, and how amorous he is. Just his luck when he encountered the lion handler. I forget to mention in these stories how I love reading about the basis of some truthfully historical events that inspired Ms Vane to include them and give them little twists. I found Sin's rhymes amusing and it's ironic that he's om his way to being a clergyman. Because of this little tidbit about Simon, I'm all the more excited to read about his and Salime's story. less
