review 1: Tästä pidin. Kirja ei yrittänyt esittää mitään muuta kuin oli - kevyt, ehkä pinnallinenkin, suuretkin murheet huumorilla kuittaava. Tässä käsitellään rasismia, huumeita, lahjontaa, korruptiota, pakkoavioliittoja, itsemurhia, perheväkivaltaa, syyllistämistä, petkutusta. Ihmeesti kaikki kuitenkin meni jotenkin vauhdikkaassa hummauksessa. Kirjoittaja on mies, siitäkö valmius anteeksiantoon? Useimmiten kirjassa suurimmat vääryydet kuitenkin kohdistuvat naisiin ja tyttöihin. Tarina veti silti hyvin, epäuskottavat käänteet pitivät vauhdissa. Kirjaa tuli aina luettua muutama sivu enemmän kuin oli aikonut.
review 2: So this is the "her" version of Q & A/Slumdog Millionaire. This time it's a hard working bright young woman who is offered an o... morepportunity to pass a series of tests and attain great wealth and prestige. Unfortunately it doesn't work quite as well as Q & A; there are too many outrageous coincidences and stereotypic characters. It will probably get optioned for a movie though.The attention that it calls to contemporary Indian issues - the wretchedness of life in many rural villages, forced marriages, corruption, the wealth gap, Gandhian crusades for the poor - are certainly worth talking about, but it's all pretty superficial. And the book is at least 50 pages too long. less
