review 1: Mim, the main character, makes an assumption at the beginning of the book, therefore, so does the reader. This assumption colours our perception of all the things that happen next. When the presumption is revealed to be not quite what we thought, we're left to rethink things we held as truths. I liked this book a lot. I will say again that I really wish we had more access to Australian books, because I love their YA tradition. Luckily I was able to get this on Kindle. The only problem I had with it was that things wrapped up a bit too neatly, with a great big bow on them. But given the fact that we only ever have Mim's perspective, maybe the turnaround at the end is more understandable. Highly recommended.
review 2: Being almost 17 is a tricky age- you're not
... moreprepared to be kept in the dark, and no one understands how horrible it is to be you. Everything out there is so much better, so full of promise; you will do things differently to your hopeless family, get away from your horrible home. But almost seventeen means you don't really understand your daggy mum and what she's coped with, or how your family story fits together. This is a really authentic voice, well drawn and honestly delivered . Nothing is quite how you picture it.....until life picks out the detail. less

Closer to 3.5, but it didn't really get to me in a way I think it wanted to.
