review 1: By the end of this book i was pretty invested in the outcome but for a good two-thirds I was ambivalent. It's a bit like watching a train wreck since the protagonist is so deliberately ignorant of things going on around him. It was fascinating reading about a Chinese man in Vietnam and there were lots of interesting cultural themes. But it was sometimes agonizing watching the man make one bad decision after the next when lives hung in the balance.
review 2: For those of us old enough to remember the Vietnam war, this is a well-written story about an outsider, the Chinese headmaster of an English language academy, who is drawn into the conflict by his need to protect his son. The headmaster, Percival Chen, is a believable and sympathetic, if not exactly heroic f... moreigure. The background story is driven by the country's gradual transition from a French colonial land of opportunity for wealthy foreigners to a death camp for those with the wrong politics. less
