review 1: By the end of this book i was pretty invested in the outcome but for a good two-thirds I was ambivalent. It's a bit like watching a train wreck since the protagonist is so deliberately ignorant of things going on around him. It was fascinating reading about a Chinese man in Vietnam and there were lots of interesting cultural themes. But it was sometimes agonizing watching the man make one bad decision after the next when lives hung in the balance.
