review 1: Magical realism Italian style. This was a quick, but extremely intense, book. The author's fascination with translation, altering clothing, and the power of words and symbols, are beautifully conveyed. The book is unpredictable and pulls you along in its wake. There seem to be so many directions it could take. The protagonist is in an unbelievably bad situation that is somehow rendered believable, and many times, she seems close to escape. The chilling end seems right out of Faulkner, but I was also reminded of Jamaica Kincaid's stories about mother-daughter relationships.
