review 1: Cette histoire débute avec ce qui semble être davantage un roman historique qu'une oeuvre de pure fiction, tellement les événements racontés se rapprochent des horreurs de la seconde guerre mondiale et de la dépersonnalisation du conflit et des enjeux qu'on peut deviner. Puis, vient un moment où l'oeuvre tourne à la fiction sans qu'on le réalise encore, en se disant que l'auteur faisait sûrement erreur, jusqu'à ce qu'on réalise que cette autre réalité aurait pu être vécue après cette guerre. Une grande oeuvre, quoiqu'on y passe un peu trop de temps dans la description de la Société technique occidentale, telle qu'imaginée avec appréhension par l'auteur.
review 2: Because this was a library book, I was supposed to read 25 pages per day to ... morebring it back on time. Well, some days I read 50 and some 75. The whole story draws the reader in. The torture scene is incredibly painful to read because it is so vivid you can see it in your mind. Perhaps Rumsfield, Cheney, & Bush should read it.....Wait, they wouldn't care anyway.....The author, who became a Romanian Orthodox Priest AFTER this was written, has a temporal & spiritual message in this work of fiction. (Just warning those who are of a completely secular mindset.) The only flaw in this work is that the dialog is sometimes just not in character. For example, Konstantin, Traian, and Nora make hugely philosophical statements so alike that it is obvious that it is Mr. Gheorghiu speaking for all three. It is so melodramatic as to be Elizabethan, yet the story takes place in WW2.Story line, plot, character development, and imagery are all top-notch. Only someone who is Eastern European could have written this. I have just learned Anthony Quinn is in the movie version.....gotta try and watch that. less
