Rise of the Battle-Bred
review 1: Basically, 97 is the story of Jane, a newspaper delivery girl. Normal teenager who lives with her mother and has One True Friend, Crady. But there is this guy named William. He moved down the street and is the perfect TDH (Tall, Dark and Handsome). Oh, and he is all but normal. How should I begin....uh...I DEFINITELY LOVED IT! First of all, Crady and Jane remind me of my best friend and myself. We are just like them, and the TDH thing? TOTALLY US! This is one of the reasons why I loved it so much, I could relate to it. This book made my OMG-ing so many times! I even stick post-its where it was necessary. I found the romance so adorable. Some of William's actions made me "aw". It was pretty fast paced. When you start your reading you immediately get into the story. I person... moreally liked Jane and her way of being. There is some adult themes that I wasn't expecting, but not during the whole book, just in the beginning. Another thing that I find really sweet is that Jane describes herself as a plain girl, but in the eyes of William, it's the complete opposite! He is a warrior and she is a normal teenager, how can nothing happen... I mean, we all know that it's impossible for them to be together without some evil characters trying to break them apart and stuff. I know that there is a quote saying that nothing is impossible, but this, my friend, is impossible. I also really liked the fact that chapters where alternated and showed me what happened with the Warloch. Also, the fact that the dialogues where not all formal and stuff was really entertaining. I mean, let's be real, I never say things like "Oh! he's looking at you." to my best friend, I say " OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGEEE! DON'T LOOK BUT HE'S LOOKING AT YOU!!!" Get it? Besides a few grammatical mistakes, everything was perfect. The end...it is very cliff-hanging. I mean REALLY cliff-hanging...and I want the second book right now. I really want to know what happened to Jane & William! And that's what make the difference. If I didn't wanted so badly to have to next book, I would gave 97 this rate... I highly recommend this book to those who fangirl pretty easily (like me... just saying). This copy was provided to me by V.L. Holt through Goodreads! Thank you so much! ★ ★ ★ ★ .9
review 2: Fabulous story concept. The author alternates between the story of the Warlochs and William and Jane's story as she weaves her tale. Early in the story I found myself struggling to read faster because I wanted to know what was going to happen, definitely pulled in quick. Jane and William are easy to like and I was rooting for them. I truly loved Crady's personality; she has a ton of it.Generally the book was clean. There were a few swear words and some adult themes. The Warlochs use women for a "physical release" and a "pleasant diversion." I tend to be super sensitive to the subject and most people wouldn't give it much thought because it was dealt with very smoothly. However, that was the reason I knock the book down to four stars.Jane seemed a little casual about the dangers associated with the Lochspawn, but I suppose the guilt from what happened because of her casual attitude/actions could add an interesting curve to book two. I found it curious that Jane left a pink trail wherever she'd been, a trail that only William could see. It makes me wonder if perhaps plain Jane isn't so plain. Looking forward to continuing the story with book two. less
