review 1: A schizophrenic woman takes her two boys to the sea for one last time. Even knowing from the back cover that this book would have a devastating end, it is the journey that intrigued me. To see her crumbling thoughts and emotions that got her there. It is a very sad and tragic book, but a powerfully engaging journey. In the beginning the punctuation was driving me to distraction - but once I got past that, it was sad and powerful.
review 2: Well, that was brutal. Like the better Lynch movies, the wonder of this book was that it looked at the aspects of humanity that we try and ignore and pretend we are not a part of. You infer what's coming as the book goes on, but that doesn't make anything about it any easier when it happens. It also stands with DFW's "The
... more Depressed Person" as one of the most honest examinations of depression I've read. less

Really nasty. The last lines and that final set of images will be with me for a long time.

This was incredibly sad, but the writing was beautiful and I was definitely drawn in.
