Isle of Swords
review 1: the Isle of Fire, Batson brings to life the tragic and heroic life of pirates and bravery. The sequel to his previous book the Isle of Swords creates another great suspense novel and thriller. The action takes place across the vast reaches of the ocean during the 1800’s when Europe’s superpowers were battling for control over the new world. But there is pirates on the high seas some ruthless blood thirsty killers and others who are decent human beings. Captain Ross of the Robert Bruce is a Scottish sailor turned pirate to help support his family in times of need. Ross is different from many pirates as he only kills when necessary and helps anybody he can. Ross in the Isle of Swords ruined the pirate Bartholomew Thorne from taking complete control over the Atlantic trad... moree routes. The novel creates what many to believe a very picture perfect novel as suspense and treachery are the main themes of his novel. When Thorne reaches an island that contains the direct descendants of the Vikings in order to create a new fleet. These Vikings have the most powerful naval fleet in the world with the most advanced ships and weaponry of the time. When Thorne sees the fleet he says, “the English have no chance, London will burn, and I will rule the oceans” (Batson 176). Thorne’s partner the merchant is histories devil. The Merchant is the cause for all global conflict and sells the tools for the trade. The Merchant provides an excellent twist to the novel as the Brethren are introduced as the global force for good. Captain Ross soon finds out of Throne’s devious plans and quickly rushes across the Atlantic Ocean with his Wolf Fleet. They cruise with the wind at their back towards London and up the Thames. When they begin to see smoke in the morning air they know they are too late to save the bombardment but can still sink Thorne’s fleet. They reach part of the fleet and sink all the ships in London harbor, but quickly learn that Thorne and the Merchant are heading to destroy the Brethren. Ross knows he is fighting a loosing battle because of the sheer number of enemy ships. But there is a hurricane approaching and Ross sails directly into the middle of it. He knows this could spell his death but at least he will take Thorne with him, “sail to the middle, there we will make our final stand” (Batson 327). Thorne drunk with ambition to kill Ross follows into the hurricane. Many of his ships are sunk and now the odds begin to turn towards Ross. Batson’s novel is an amazing story, the action packed novel creates a very well told detailed story that made me never want to put it down. The journey and plot line kept going with even greater action then before. The sequel and the Isle of Fire creates a heart pounding thriller that always leaves the reader wanting more.
review 2: Captain Declan Ross thought it was over. Much of the treasure was recovered, and now he and his crew are working for England, recruiting pirates from the high seas. But Thorne isn't dead. He's planning revenge, using a forgotten people, decendants of the vicious Vikings--and he plans to turn England into an isle of horror and fire. His greatest ally is the mysterious Merchant, a ruthless and cunning person that has been haunting the western world for years. Captain Ross is the only hope England has--and England's king has betrayed him for the treasure. This book was amazing. It didn't seem to have as much 'point' in the plot as Isle of Swords did (like the treasure), but nonetheless, it was another rollicking adventure from Wayne Thomas Batson. I highly recommend this for anyone, even if you don't like pirate stories. Trust me, this is no ordinary 'pirate story'. less
