review 1: They were destined for great things, but will they find their true calling before it's too late?Curse of the Spider King co-authored by Wayne Thomas Batson and Christopher Hopper, brings forth a whole slew of characters who might not be quite what they seem.... Around their thirteenth birthday, seven children begin to have strange experiences. Bouts of super-human strength, eyesight; mind-reading, to name a few. The answer to these strange "gifts" they seem to possess? They're from another world, which is in the midst of a terrible war. How can they discover the truth about themselves when they don't know who to trust? And then there are those who would wish to be rid of them. Those who would stop at nothing to eliminate the threat they pose.Christian fantasy is something ... moreI've recently tried out on a select, few titles. By far, Curse of the Spider King is the most suspenseful I've read. They're are lots of get-out-of-there, get-out-of-there moments for me, where I was silently pleading with the character to make it out alive. (I won't tell you if they did or not: You have to suffer like I did.)It definitely kept my interest, though sometimes it was hard for my brain to wrap around a few fantastical elements of the book. Fantasy isn't my strongest genre's so that could be the reason. The drawbacks which made me give it a three-star rating is twofold. First, I felt to be a Christian title, God wasn't mentioned much. I'm not one for preachy books. With that said, this one seemed to be lacking enough Biblical principles to sate my appetite.Secondly the characters fell a little flat in my opinion. They had their likes and dislikes, personalities, and back stories, but they lacked that special something. I desperately wanted to be drawn to the characters, (especially Jimmy)but felt I wasn't really given a chance. This may be due to the fact that with seven main characters they're just wasn't time spent with them to really figure them out as individuals. But as this is more of a plot-driven novel, it may not bother someone else as much as me.I recommend Curse of the Spider King for anyone ages twelve and up. Due to some rather violent scenes, you may want to screen this before giving to your kids as each person is different on their sensitivity rate. All in all it's a nice, clean read which I enjoyed and recommend to fantasy-lovers.
review 2: WARNING: this book is filled with danger, drefids, and warspiders! This is what I consider to be a good book. Not only does it have the listed above, but it also has elves! The plot is developed and the trilogy left me wanting more by these authors. After this book I went immediately into the second, Venom and Song, because I couldn't wait to see what happened to the elves and Allyra. You have to have a little imagination, or you'll have to develop one, but you'll love this book! less
