review 1: River God and Seventh Scroll are just superb. But unfortunately once again this latest episode in Taita's tale falls woefully short of the earlier books excellence. For firms sake I finished the book to see the tale through as I fell in love with Taita way back at the start but now he is tiresome as a character. So all in all a readable amble carried along by the strength of the early books. A much more tolerable read than the last Wilbur Smith, Those In Peril. This was simply excruciating and offensive to women in the extreme. Sorry Wilbur, this will be the last book of yours I shall read after a thirty year love of your work.
review 2: I was so excited to learn that Smith wrote a 5th book for one of my favorite historical fiction series. Desert God wasn't
... more as good as the previous books, however. Taita throughout the series had become increasingly more boastful and conceited, but in this book, he was almost unbearable. The plot started slowly too. But once Smith found his stride, it took off in typical heart-pounding action This plot was more focused on battles than court intrigue and courtesans. I prefer reading about life at court and less battle strategy, although war strategy can be interesting.I gave it 4 stars because I couldn't put it down once I got into it. Wilbur Smith does know how to suck the reader in. less

Classic Wilbur Smith. . . however the chapters are very short. . . sometimes only two pages long.
