review 1: I choose this book based on the setting in western North Carolina and the southern voice. This novel has been called southern gothic and that is a good description. It has a bit of everything; dysfunctional relationships, tragedy, a charming religious zealot complete with healing hands and snakes, and wo brothers-one unable to help the other. The tragedy in this story can be seen coming and yet the one person who could stop it does not. I was disappointed in how this character, Jess, was developed and especially disappointed in the guilt he did not seem to bear when the whole situation imploded leaving him parentless and without his brother. Really? How would one move on from that??
review 2: Magnifying a very specific moment in time, this author gives us sever
... moreal perspectives of an incident of violence, including the steps leading up to it as well as the aftermath. Even with a story pared down to the bare specifics, the author still manages to mystify the incident and show us the sharp edges of the people in this small rural community and their many faults. There is always more to a story than one person's side, and this novel illuminates that truth to a high degree. This was a mostly dark but enjoyable read. less

Not sure how to rate this. Maybe a 2.5? Depressing, dark southern story, but well written.

A worthwhile read with clearly drawn characters both good and evil.
