Dinah has lost everyone she ever loved. Her brother was brutally murdered. The wicked man she believed was her father betrayed her. Her loyal subjects have been devastated by war. And the boy she gave her heart to broke it completely. Now a dark queen has risen out of the ashes of her former life. Fury is blooming inside Dinah, poisoning her soul and twisting her mind. All she has left is Wonderland and her crown, and her obsession to fight for both. But the war rages on, and Dinah could inherit a bloodstained throne. Can a leader filled with love and rage ever be the ruler her kingdom needs? Or will her all-consuming wrath bring Wonderland to its knees? This is not a story of happily ever after. This is the story of the Queen of Hearts.
Jeez. Could that summary be anymore melodramatic? I mean, seriously. Despite that summary this book isn’t all that dark and murderous. Although there is a war, a very short one, and people die the ‘fury’ that Dinah harbors isn’t all that dark and poisoning. She actually has quite a good hold on that fury and I was really impressed by how controlled she was through most of this book.
However, there was that ‘pivotal’ moment in War of Cards that just made me lose my shit. For once in the retellings of villains history can we NOT have the cause for them being a cold-hearted villain be because the person they loved betrayed them/died? It’s getting really old and makes me cry. I mean, I didn’t even like the whole Wardley/Dinah ship either. So the fact that you made that the reason that Dinah turned into the ‘murderous’ Queen of Hearts, is just…BLAH. Not to mention Vittoire’s real name? Now, you’re just playing ‘hey how else can I connect this to Alice inWonderland’ game.
Final Rating: 2 out of 5 stars. I’m so glad that I’m done with this series and at some point I really need to not read series where I hated the first book. There are so many other books I should be reading. But hey, on the good side, this book helped me with my NaNo project so there’s that.
