review 1: Wow, Department 19. A great new series! So let me tell you a little story. It started on the first day of our new school, and me and my friend (glorified book nerds) ofcourse rushed straight to the library as soon as we could. Now, my friend loves all like blood and gore and weapons and stuff, so when he saw THE RISING, with the character with a gazillion weapons, he fell in love. Then, after that he read book 1, and now he is reading book 3. He reccomended the series to me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the writing style, and there was lots of gore and fight scenes! The vampires really scared me and Alexandru was no acception. The only reason this book isn't getting a five star, is because throughout the whole book (500 pages) we see the utter wrath of Alexandru, h... moreis cruel, painful killings with no hesitation, his unhuman nature... [CAUTION SPOILERS FROM NOW ON] but I felt when we got to the final battle in Northumberland, it was kinda disappointing. I mean, we had 450 pages of suspense leading up to the final fight, and then Jamie just shot a wooden beam and the unbeatable Alexandru poofed into guts and gore. I think this is Will Hill's first book, so it is a great one. I'd recommend it! Time to start "The Rising"...
review 2: This book was an action movie in book form. It kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. The flashbacks really helped tell the story, telling us the history behind the department and how its history has shaped the events in the modern-day. The flashbacks themselves could really use their own book. But this book was unique in that it told a very different story, differing from other vampire books. It was a little too gory for my taste, but it was needed. This was presented in a very real world, and Jamie is just an average, every day kid who finds himself fighting vampires. He is lonely and angry at the world and uses his rage to fight, giving a logical explanation for his skills. One of the best parts of the book was that it is set in a very real world except there's, you know, vampires. Jamie had to go through hardships to get to the person he was at the end of the story, so he didn't just get there with a lack of explanations. He got there through pain and sadness, very emotions that we can all relate to. I'm a comic nerd, so the descriptions of all the cool gadgets and suit descriptions really appealed to me. I also loved the friendship and romance in it, as it made a more cohesive story. Anger, sadness, betrayal and loss are the things that make us the people we are today, and the presence of these things provide logical explanations for Jamie's evolution throughout the story. Can't wait to read the sequel!!! less
