review 1: This was described to me as SuperWhoLock in book form (Supernatural + Doctor Who + Sherlock). It did not disappoint. There are elements that remind me of all three shows - the eccentric investigator who solves mysteries by seeing what others cannot, the supernatural lore - it's like a love letter to some of my favorite shows. Fans will love it, but the uninitiated will enjoy Jackaby, too. It's clever, the characters are fun, and the plot will keep you reading. I'm ready for the next one. Or hey could make it a TV show. I'd watch.
review 2: Awesomeness!! Could not put this down once I started it. Set in late 1800's, a young woman seeking independence and adventure arrives in a New England town. The only job she can land is as an assistant to a very odd Sherlock
... moreHolmesy character named Jackaby. Together, they make a formidable team in tackling the evildoers of the town, especially the nonhuman variety. They are assisted by a host of memorable, quirky characters. less

Not bad for a first novel. Interesting characters, but way too easy to figure out.

Fluffy but fun. Jackaby is a charming if inadequately fleshed out character.
