review 1: Vlautin obviously knows his Carver, but there is enough of his own unique voice to make Lean On Pete stand out. Simple, clean prose with great depth. Not everything works--a few cliches work their way in, and a few of the scenes resolve far too tidily for this type of story. But what does work is pretty great, and I look forward to checking out more Vlautin's work. Worth reading for the portrayal of the father/son relationship in the first third of the book alone, and if the rest of the book couldn't quite live up to those early pages, it still carries itself well. Recommended for those with Carver fixations (that would be me) and lovers of great, unpretentious Pacific Northwest fiction.
review 2: I'm giving it a 3 star, mostly because the writing was a 4 and h... moreow much I liked it was a 1 so I figured I'd meet somewhere in the middle.... I'm sorry but after being pelted with these kinds of books in high school, I'm seriously done reading them in college. We had to read this for a college reading class and I'm not really sure what the point was. The writing was just fine but nothing extraordinary. Everything was all high stakes and honestly depressing and you keep having all this hope for this poor 15 year old kid and then something horrible happens and hes gotta start all over again. Yes, life sucks, sometimes a little sometimes a lot. I read books to find light in this world, not to be more depressed about the sucky times. At least the ending was decent. less
