review 1: The third of Willy Vlautin's four rock-solid novels, Lean on Pete gives us another yarn full of hunger and tremendous struggle in a cruel, hard-scrabble world. His characters are rich and deep, full of contradictions, and the places these people live and breath are wrought with crisp, spare prose that ticks right along. A subtle and contemplative humanity catches and glows between the lines, even as good people and bad take and use and, in the end, probably just do the best they can to get through. Expect no broad or sweeping generalizations, no easy questions or easy answers. Expect moral complexity in a patient, and realistic narrative. Most of all, expect to be quietly heartbroken and redeemed by yet another terrific book by Vlautin.
review 2: Everything sai
... mored in the reviews is true. The writing is sparse, the story is harrowing and heart-breaking, but ultimately uplifting. I am bowled over by the author's ability to so realistically portray a 15-yr old boy's journey into homelessness, how he got there, and how he attempts to get out of his dilemma. You really feel, smell, even taste the despair, and see how over time a sweet, good-intentioned soul could be forced to commit violent acts given the desperateness of his situation. Bravo for helping us see and more importantly, empathize with these realities. I will be reading more from Vlautin. less

Gritty, heartbreaking, hard to put down. A boy, a stolen horse, and an unforgettable pilgrimage.

Starkly written, moving story of a young man in desperate circumstances. Hopeful ending.
