review 1: To be honest, I could not finish this book. I expected so much more. There are brief passages of real beauty but overall the 'folksy' language makes for an unpleasant read and the fact that it is deadly dull doesn't help. And, for those interested, it contains some of the most graphic, yet un-erotic sex scenes that I have ever read. I love Woody's songs and poetry, but his one and only foray into novel writing is not for me. Steinbeck did this so much better.
review 2: Well, I was hoping to like this book, because I [1] love Woody Guthrie's songs, [2] am a student of the Dust Bowl years and [3] live in an adobe house, but nope. This book is not my book. Basically an unending rant against capitalism, including a long diatribe while the protagonist makes love t
... moreo his wife. I am not a fan of capitalism, especially as it was practiced in the early to mid-20th century [or the early 21st century, for that matter], but anti-capitalism as a one-note theme does not make for a good read. Steinbeck [Grapes of Wrath] and Sinclair [The Jungle] stepped in this as well, but at least provided an excellent read for the greater part of their otherwise outstanding novels. Woody got into it in the first chapter and never let it go. less
