review 1: A beautifully written story about the sea, life and the environment. I look forward to more translations of his writting. It is a story of two different people dealing with their own losses and loves in our changing world. His descriptions of Atile'i's island bring the place to life for everyone who lives there. A Wonderfully written novel that makes it hard to step away from even after you have you read the last page.
review 2: I got an e-galley of this book from Edelweiss and it was definitely an interesting read. The description about the island youth and the woman with the missing husband and son meeting and heading off to the mountain to search for her family is a rather poor description. That's only one event in novel chock full of events -- and only tw... moreo characters amongst many. I don't know if it's the writing style or translation issues or just different cultural writing norms, but I found parts of the book hard to understand. I couldn't always tell when things were happening and often it felt like the crucial ending to an event or scene was just... not there. Despite this, the quirky characters and storytelling was very enjoyable and I was excited to near (the few) answers. less
