review 1: The standouts in this book are the essay on E.M. Forster (whom I love, and therefore cannot separate my enjoyment of the essay from my enjoyment of him) and the film reviews, which were so great I wanted to stuff the book into my mouth and eat it.The rest is a mixed bag; I disagree violently with some of the opinions expressed, and you will need some appetite for pretension and 'the scholarly stink' to enjoy the manner of the expression. That said, the collection is engaging, thoughtful and passionate, and I imagine I shall return to some of the essays in the future.

... morek when you mentally put it together as you do when reading a "book" it takes something from it. I keep a shelf now of poetry, short fiction, and essay books. Things I can pick up in a spare hour and consume a piece in whole. I am anxious to see if a follow up is coming. I loved her essays "Joy", "Love in the Gardens" and "The North West London Blues", I don't know if it is just continued improvement or if there is something in her writing that really blossoms in these more open subjects. All very wonderful though. less

I love Zadie Smith! She is thoughtful, precise, and creative. I enjoyed her DFW essay in particular.

My crush intensified when I read "Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the only TV show I have truly loved."
