review 2: The plot is a good, solid adventure. It will appeal to book lovers and history buffs, and while there are romantic subplots it is (for the most part) graciously free of plodding love scenes describing heaving breasts. The main character, Page, is fantastically conceived, independent and self-reliant, and is compelling enough that I enjoy following the story alongside her. For the most part, Klein's writing is brilliant, but there are points where the narrative seems to skip sentences and reach logical points without clarifying how we got there - little things moments where I had to wonder aloud, "Wait...when did we get into a car? There is no other mention of a car...OK, I guess we're in a car now." While I could do without some of the excessive descriptions of food (this is a novel, not a menu) and these plot jumps, the novel still holds together nicely at a solid 5 stars. But that dialogue. OH, THAT DIALOGUE. I have never heard conversations flow like what Klein gives her characters. I could grant that maybe one person would have flowery speech, or even if a character's inner monologue was more elevated and poetic; but here, the language of the characters is entirely indististinguishable from the narrative language surrounding them. I grew to dread any scene that involved multiple characters, because I just knew that it was going to be stilted and awkward, like the bad dialogue you get in a crummy soap opera by a novice writer who still sees him/herself as some undiscovered genius. Really, the dialogue is unforgivably bad, and it detracted from the story.Overall, though, this is a book worth reading. It has the history and the artifacts and the books and the mystery and the subtle romance that makes for a nice vacation read. Go for it. less

I shocking like this story. I thought it was a little too wordy in places but still a great read.
