review 1: I didn't get very far with this book. It isn't a long book to start with, but the immediate breakneck speed of the story had me wondering if it would end in forty pages. Nearly all detail or explanation was discarded, the story leapfrogging from one topic to another as though the author has a very short attention span. In almost one paragraph it developed from receiving an invitation to investigate a mystery, a snap decision to go, to in the car on the way. By the next page they had arrived! It was similar to a toddler trying to tell a joke who just cannot wait to tell you the ending and sacrifices the background and buildup to get there. Who is this person who invited you? Where do you live and what are your circumstances? For that matter, who are you? The charact... moreers are completely undeveloped; household decor was described in more depth. I don't know if this is because the author depends on a reader having read the previous books, although this one states in the beginning that it is a stand-alone plot. The dialog was flippant, juvenile, and not suitable to the characters; I thought the character who was the mother was the daughter for a while. I was sorry to see such a good opportunity for an interesting mystery wasted. It might be a good starter book for adolescents who don't have a lot of experience reading.
review 2: Hexes and X’s is kooky, funny, and entertaining. A light quick read, great for the beach or poolside reading. The detectives are a mother and daughter pair, Zo and Claire respectively. The one who requested their assistance is a self proclaimed witch named Matilda, with whom Zo attended college. The reason for the required assistance is Grandpa was an eccentric who filled a house with booby traps so no one would find his treasure. The hunt begins with a ‘sketch,’ includes rumors of pirates and a dead housekeeper, threats of witchcraft by The Coven who meets at the house and a cast of town-folk who kept me in stitches. The puzzle of the house would have read better if there had been a diagram in the beginning. Or the sketch used as a map had been shown. I was a bit lost as to where they were and how they got there – especially ‘Poop Falls.’ lolThis is the 3rd book of a series but since I found it free for Kindle on Amazon I thought I would give it a try. I don’t know that I would pay for the others but may put them on a list of books I look for at book sales. less

A YR book that is a mad-cap adventure. An easy, fun read that is a part of a series.
