review 1: Ludicrous, fairly weak beginning, surprisingly complex and clever ending. It's got a heavy dose of comedy/satire to it, while at the same time not being a particularly light or fluffy book. Crazy ideas, random things thrown every which way... but at the same time everything tied in together, in a wholly unpredictable way. And I'm pretty good at predicting endings.Despite the beginning, it picks up FAST. It's easy to move through, easy to get involved, and I finished this one inside a few days.
review 2: While churning out lightweight fantasy, Martinez is doing a nice job of keeping it fresh. His works are easy to read, amusing, and decently thought through from the initial premises. What more can you ask? +1 for Nessy, the unlikeliest of heroines. Some of the o... morether characters might have been better, but that's just my taste. There are some nods to Harry Potter concepts, but of course quite a few of the Potter concepts weren't at all new either. This - or any Martinez - is just the book to read between two heavier works. less
