review 1: Ok so I bought this in the sale bin at Chapters where I find many good reads. This one was intriguing because it had a good mystery story and was set in my ancestral home of Scotland. The characters are charismatic and idiosyncratic. The setting is used to create mood and suspense. The dialogue is really well done with lots of local dialect "frankle" for example. Almost needs a glossary. So the story is fast paced and interesting . . . A real pager turner. . That is until I got about 320 pages in and the book started back at chapter 1. After I threw the novel across the room and retrieved it I found that the story did in fact continue after a repeat of opening chapters. In the end I finished the book having only missed 40 or so crucial pages. My rating reflects the frustra... moretion not the writing, thanks Chapters . . . What a frankle!
review 2: I enjoyed this one even more than the first in the series. The local newspaper the Highland Gazette has had a revamp and the editor is worried that they will have difficulty finding enough news to interest the readers, but he had no need to worry as it's all go on the Black Isle, with two deaths on the same estate on the same day. There are some really likeable characters and it's a realistic portrayal of life in 1950s Scotland, particularly from a woman's point of view. less

I was engaged in the book from the beginning and enjoyed it more than the first book in the series.
