review 1: Added to both Scotland & Canadian Reading Challenges 2013. The setting is familiar and descriptive Scottish Highlands while a main character is Canadian with plenty of Canadian historic detailing.Absolutely blindsided by this novel. My head was still spinning days after completing the final twist and the final page. A murder committed that effectively brings the past into the present in unusual ways, affecting more than a few individuals and adding relational chaos to several.Beside the complexity of the intertwining past, the unexpected conclusion dropped my mouth to the floor and turned my thoughts inside out. Indeed, A.D. Scott is definitely another new to me author to follow.
review 2: I am unsure what to think of this novel, "Beneath The Abbey Wall" b
... morey A.D.Scott. I chose it because of the setting, a small town in the Highlands of Scotland. The title and cover were also enticing. The story, which takes place in the later 1950's, begins with a murder of a well respected no-nonsense, but quite private woman, Mrs. Smart. The murder of Mrs. Smart, the office manager of the local newspaper, "The Highland Gazette" is of course, a shock. Such a nice woman! They declare. Never the less - who "really" knew Mrs. Smart? Knew of her past? Even her present affairs? All this mystery and then....and then...the author goes off to hither places, introducing ideas and scenarios, even thoughts of a character yet to materialize or why???Why?? It was often I'd become confused with where the author was taking me. Not to surprise me later with a clue, but nothing at times. I really should give examples although my mind is still confused. It was the discovery of why Mrs. Smart was killed, who done it and the purpose to the murder that kept me going. In time you will discover she had a lover Don McLeod, who also worked at the paper. A mysterious handsome Canadian appears after the murder. An up and coming soon to be divorced (not appreciated in the town in the '50's), Joanne who works at the paper and has an eye on Neil, the newcomer. Actually the characters are quite an interesting lot: Glasgow newly planted Mcllister the senior editor, Rob an star reporter and rock star (in the area), Jenny, the Tinker or Traveler Woman who knows every past secret and many more Mc's Mac's and Scottish clan mix. The story does have a rather interesting plot, it's just the presentation of it that stopped me in my tracks rather than the actual answers to the mystery. There were times the use of "she" or "he" became a bit confusing as there were characters talking before "she" or "he" outside of those characters were discussed - or maybe I'm wrong. Let me think about it. I did like reading about the Scottish highlanders. I have read in other reviews Ms. Scott has written previous books and I might check those out. The jury is out on that right now. less
