review 1: This is a VERY disturbing but powerful YA novel that takes a lot of risks with it's characters and with the events in the book. Three neglected middle schoolers kidnap a four year old and commit acts of aggression for no appreciable reason other than at the whim of a budding sociopath, an 8th grade girl named Bounce. Yet reading the chapters told from the point of view of Wiggins, the only character that seems to have some kind of moral center, this novel reminds me somehow of Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye", that is if Holden Caulfield had been poor, abandoned by the adults in his life, continually pumped up on "oxycotton", and if he had lived in the 21st century. Rapp has created a gripping story that's hard to put down and very hard to forget.

... moreas difficult for me to read this book. I usually enjoy prose and I really enjoy realistic fiction, but this tipped scales that I didn't want tipped. I was uncomfortable reading this as an adult and fail to see any child to whom I could recommend this. The writing style was done pretty well though and it was intriguing. I definitely couldn't put it down until I knew what happened to Frog...but in the end, it gave me nightmares. I know that there are sociopathic children who are neglected and abused, but this read was just too intense for me. I DO understand why other adults would like this though. The picture painted was quite vivid and the 4 points of view do help see inside each child's life/soul. Still, read with caution. Not for the faint of heart. less

The book itself is alright. I have a problem with the particular language used.
