review 1: what r the odds that the stranger sitting next to u a plane is destined to change your life? this story is spread over 4 decades and each chapter is told by a different character.jo is a life long optimist and lives life by the seat of her pants. then she meets dean and her world is turned upside down add to the mix a long lost father is dying and a mother with a secret of her own to be honest i felt the author had taken her finger off the pulse. there were too many co-incidences 2 people sitting next to one another on a plane when they share their families' histories 2 women meeting in a park in london - who would have been sister in laws dean should have hated his father more and not blamed the mistress. she chose her family and he could have just gone back to his own an... mored not walked away what happened to the contract that dean was bidding for and would make his career? the author just threw that in and forgot it jo could easily have traced dean thru his chicago firm sorry bev
review 2: In a genre that too often follows the formulaic structure of 'girl gets dumped, girl gets fired, girl meets boy(s), girl finds dream job', Adele Parks' recent masterpiece offers an original, memorable story. The State We're In goes beyond finding 'Mr Right' or the perfect career by focusing on the brief - but by no means insignificant - love affair between Jo, the seemingly hopeless romantic, and cynical commitment-phobe Dean. Having said that, this moving story begins with Joanna Russell, single and jobless in her mid-thirties (shock horror) and on her way to Chicago to stop her ex-fiancé from walking down the aisle with his new lady. It's a happy coincidence - or fate, if you prefer - that she meets Dean, her perfect match and complete opposite, at the start of this life-shaping journey. Despite his initial efforts to resist engaging in conversation with the excitable - and admittedly attractive - woman who seems adamant to share her life story, Dean cannot help but be intrigued by her ridiculous plan to win back her ex on the off chance that he was 'the one'. However, somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean the two form an unlikely friendship, which, much to their surprise, quickly blossoms into a gripping love story. By writing from multiple perspectives, Parks allows us to see each of the main characters from various view points, providing deeper insight into their hopes, dreams, flaws and regrets. As their relationship develops, we see Jo's fragility and optimism (or perhaps naivety) through the eyes of her equally fragile, but emotionally crippled counterpart. Likewise, we see Dean's infrequent and unguarded displays of weakness and resentment from the perspective of his obstinately optimistic opposite. During their brief but passionate romance, the couple challenge each other's outlook on love and self-fulfilment, which - despite all the twists and turns they encounter along the way - proves to change their lives forever, as it will yours as well. less

Enjoyable chick lit with a nice twist in the tail. Pack this in your beach bag.

It was all going swimmingly, then Parks ruined everything.

Complete and absolute clichéd rubbish.
