review 1: I really enjoyed it, it's a lovely book with beautifully detailed descriptions of the characters & their lives. Vivid & heartbreaking story line with Alzheimers and infertility without the melodramatic side of it.Dartmouth was described so vividly you feel that you have lived there. Eloise & Margaret were my favourite characters they wove you in without you noticing it. A heartbreaking story of love, illness, friendship, deception & betayal.
review 2: World book night book given to me by JoanStruggled my way through this book & only really kept reading because I wanted to know what happens to the main character.I developed & still have (2.5months after finishing the book) an unreasonably real:- hatred for the so called "best" friend,- disappointment in the main
... more character,- disgust for both the main men in the story- pity for the grandparentsAnd an overwhelming alarm at the cruelty of people towards those they supposedly hold dear.Alas to say exactly why would give the story away to anyone who hasn't read it which I try not to do in reviews.I both did & didn't see the twist coming at the end. It was obvious but I was hoping against hope it wasn't going to be the case.I am permanently irritated in real life by the extent to which people miscommunication with each other, especially those they supposedly love. The only way for any relationship, friendship or otherwise to work is 100% honesty, cards on the table, come what may. I find it jawdroppingly ridiculous how people can be jealous of people they care about's happiness or apparently perfect lives. The problem is that it is all too real in life. So many people cannot be happy for those who are truly happy or successful or in somehow a better position than themselves in whatever area. Instead of drawing inspiration, bitterness creeps in. So sad but so true. This book is the final straw for me. I'm done with real life books for a while. Real life is unfolding around me daily. I don't need to read about people's children, IVF, divorces, affairs, drug use, theft, murder, the daily grind, housework, building a home, people's careers, promotions, loves & losses & the rest. Bring me fantasy, gnomes, elves, faeries, super powers, fun, mischief, anything but another real life story for a while. less
