review 1: All in all, this was a well written, compelling story of the aftermath of an imagined present day world catastrophe, somewhat in the vein of dystopian books such as The Road. An independently published eBook currently available only for download to Kindle readers, I'm surprised it hasn't been picked up by a print publisher, as it's certainly as good if not better, than many of their fiction offerings. It's well edited, written and thought out. The story pulls you in and pushes you along. This is not science fiction and is without any supernatural or fantastical elements. The story we follow is how ordinary Scot residents, who had been leading their usual mundane modern day lives, suddenly find themselves in a drastically altered environment, coping with life and death sit... moreuations to simply survive. They are Ill prepared, out of shape, without technology to assist. We follow Ed and his ragtag companions coming face to face with death and destruction, following them on their quest for survival with little to rely on but their own legs and feet and what they could scrounge. Often brutally honest in it's portrayal of how self interest can clash with the greater good, I found the story believable. I often stopped reading to consider how I'd do this or that differently, which is part of the attraction of this story. My only quibble, and the reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5, is that some of the characters, particularly the few women in the book, were not as well developed or fleshed out as I believe they should have been. They appear at key moments in the book, but we don't really get a feel for who they are or what they're thinking, beyond being plot points.
review 2: A little too "normal" for my tastes but the story is well written and some characters are pretty mysterious. It was interesting to begin the story before the apocalypse as I don't see this part often when I read dystopian books. The journey was long, with no real surprise (humans...), more about growing and building friendship than surviving (or running), I think. I would like to know more about the life of each member of the club and about what will happen next in this world! less
