Greetings and salutations, my rabid readers! Today I’ll be reviewing a character from the popular books series Wings of Fire. Namely, the antagonist of the latest arc: Darkstalker. I’ve provided you with a link to the Wings of Fire site in case you want to learn more about it, but as for now…well, let’s get into reviewing Darkstalker! [Wings of Fire Wiki]
Darkstalker is an immortal, enormously powerful dragon who seeks to become ruler of all of Pyrrhia. Normal evil-guy ambition, right? However, there is something that keeps this ambition from becoming flat—he doesn’t realize that what he’s doing is wrong.
You see, Darkstalker has what is referred to as “animus” magic, which gives him the power to control and manipulate objects as he wishes, but at the cost of his soul. However, he created a talisman to keep his soul safe in an attempt to keep himself from doing bad things.
What he doesn’t realize, though, is that without a price, there’s nothing to hold an animus back from doing whatever they want with their lives….and the lives of others.
You see, Darkstalker realizes that objects aren’t the only thing animus magic controls. It can also control other dragons, other sentient beings, and bend them to his will.
That’s when things start getting bad.
Darkstalker manipulates his father into killing himself, declares himself king of the NightWings, but his rule is stopped the first time around by the two dragons closest to him, Clearsight (his mate) and Fathom (his closest friend). Fathom enchants a bracelet to put Darkstalker to sleep indefinitely, and Clearsight tricks him into wearing it, burying Darkstalker under the mountains as they fell.
But thousands of years later, he’s back, and for some reason, even the dragons who feared him (or his memory) trust him. Because he learned nothing. He still believes that because of his incredible power and his horrible life, he’s owed happiness–and he thinks happiness will come in the form of power over Pyrrhia. He takes over the tribe of the NightWings once again, and takes them to the old Night Kingdom.
Where he strips a descendant of Fathom of his animus power and leaves him to rot in a cell.
However, Darkstalker isn’t necessarily a bad dragon. He’s simply entitled. However, entitlement can be as dangerous as malicious intent when the one with power is also the one who believes he deserves it all.
This has been a review of the character Darkstalker, brought to you by RabidKitKat! If you want to see more of this character, or just want to know what I’m talking about, read the book Darkstalker, a standalone from the Wings of Fire series. Bye for now!
