review 1: Alan Bradley has created one of the most unique detectives in the entire mystery genre with eleven year old Flavia de Luce. Set in a crumbling English manor home, Flavia continues to outwit her two older sisters and find co-conspirators with the most interesting members of the local community. This installment had more than the regular number of unexpected twists and turns, making it very memorable.
review 2: I haven't read the other books in the series, but didn't have trouble figuring out who people were and what the set-up was. What I hadn't realized, though, is that this is (I think it must be) a young adult novel. Flavia is a witty and precocious almost-12-yr-old who is vastly more clever than just about any other 12-yr-old. Her family, in fact her whole
... more living situation, is truly bizarre. It think it's just the sort of thing a real-life 12-yr-old reader would enjoy. But if that reader were a fraction as clever as the heroine, she would have lots of questions about the holes in the plot and the way silence and knowing looks cover a lack of explanation. less
