review 1: This is a short book (under 200 pages) that celebrates the crossword puzzle on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. Rather than being a straightforward documentary history, it's a collection of short chapters on a variety of subjects relating to the crossword puzzle, including proposals via crossword, famous crossword afficionados, and the Simpson's episode that was connected to the Sunday Times puzzle. The author is British, so the book looks at both American and British (cryptic) crosswords. There were some interesting tidbits, but I wish the narrative had been more sustained.
