Star Trek: Movie Novelizations
review 1: 2.5 stars. Official novelization of the film. According to an interview, ADF started with the script, saw bits of the film while writing, and seemed to have at least some back and forth with Orci. The result is fairly representative, with details added for gaps in the film (sometimes helpful and sometimes not -- see Roger's great review for more on this). That said, while I loved the film I mostly just skimmed through this, focusing on those segments I had questions about during the film. I was looking for more detail/cut scenes or lines from the longer scripts/backstory that I thought must surely exist (like in the Star Wars novelizations), but there didn't seem to be much of that here. Or at least I expected more.So overall, it was OK. The writing is fine and probably wa... morerrants a 3 star rating, but somehow it got tedious and I'd just as soon watch the film...
review 2: Like Foster's novelization of the first Star Trek Reboot Movie this novel is basically the film with the deleted scenes inserted in their proper locations. But that aside Any fan of the new Star Trek Verse should read the novelizations because of the writer. Alan Dean Foster is an amazing writer and really brings something unique to what, in lesser hands, would be a dull screenplay summery. Even though you do not get the depth and background that you would if these were his original characters, Foster still allows some soul to shine in them making them well defined characters and adding depth to a story you thought you knew. less
