review 1: TEN STARS!!!! what a PHENOMENAL READ...i just finished it and am going to start the second one as soon as i finish this. i hope this series goes on forEVER! the story line is fantastic--interesting on an intellectual level and engaging on an emotional level. the story is greatly augmented by alan russell's obvious and innate talent as a master of words....the references - and humor - in the book are on a level much deeper than the great majority of what i've read lately - gideon and sirius are knowable and lovably human (even sirius). when i like a book, i just know i like it and don't usually bother writing reviews because any meaningful review (to me, at least) requires than a data-dump of adjectives and more meat than a mere recap of the story line. a good review f... moreor me tells me WHY the book is so great and like a typical woman, i'm more attuned to the way i felt while reading the book than the analysis of the structure, etc. in the words of justice stewart "i know it when i see it." so contrary to my derision of most reviews, i've seen it and i know it...this book is a must-read regardless of your typical genre. the only criticism i have is that in the rare instance i read a book of such high quality, i inevitably start to read 10 or 15 books thereafter, frustrated by my discontent because everything else seems so blah, uninteresting and bland. so again, i hope this series goes on forever!thank you mr. russell for sharing your talent! i'm off to read guardians of the night!
review 2: This was the narrated Kindle version and I found the narration forced and robotic at times; Unnatural. I'm guessing it's the same narrator as in one of my Spanish programs. As soon as the person was introduced, I had guessed correctly at who the perp probably was in one of the cases; I just hadn't known the why. The other case didn't seem to be as mysterious. Just as much time was spent on Gideon's social life as in his solving the mysteries. While I laughed at some of the humor, I would never be able to spend much time with someone like Gideon who made a joke out of everything; that gets annoying fast. Several characters engage in the same type of repartee amongst each other; Those parts were the funniest. Okay so what did I LIKE about this book enough to give it 4 stars? Heck if I know. I can't seem to figure that out. I just did. It never bogged down. less
