review 1: A noir take on the King Arthur legends. Bledsoe's anachronistic hard-boiled fantasy probably isn't to everybody's taste, but I love it. If you like action and adventure with swords instead of guns, but your tolerance for pseudo-medieval language is low, this series is your meat. You won't find any "forsoothly" talk here. My only quibble with Bledsoe is that he can't seem to create a character, however minor, that I don't want to know more about. Oh, wait, that isn't a drawback, is it...?
review 2: I admit that I was sort of hoping for more forward progress on Mr. LaCrosse's storyline, and Dark Jenny is instead an extended flashback (albeit one told as a tavern tale on a cold winter's night). It also turns out to be an extensive King Arthur pastiche, which I had
... more not expected. Fortunately, Bledsoe has original and interesting things to say about it, and enough twists to that familiar tale that I was every bit as gripped by it as the previous two LaCrosse novels. less
