Both By Kimberly Rae Miller.
I have been reading at a staggering rate, even for myself. I’ve read about 6-7 books from October-November already. These two books happen to be my favorite so far, that I read recently. I decided I could kill two birds with one stone since they are from the same author.
What makes both books so enjoyable is that even though Kim is writing about her life in both, she keeps the story lines completely separate, which I appreciated. She makes small references to certain parts from the other books but you could read both and feel like you’re seeing two completely different sides of her life. Kimberly Rae Miller comes off as someone who is extremely easy to relate to. I read Beautiful Bodies first and I loved her humor and writing style so much I went back and read her first book, Coming Clean to learn more about her upbringing. I honestly liked her so much that I even went on to read her blog, which you can find HERE!
Coming Clean. So, Kimberly writes about her upbringing. It is super interest because… Her parents are hoarders! As she gets older it gets worst and it goes from just her dad with the problem, to her mom eventually becoming some what just as bad. I loved this book because it was so honest. She admits to a lot of embarrassment and shame towards her parents and their situation — which I feel like a lot of us can relate to when it comes to our families.
Even though her story seems like it wouldn’t be much a page turner, it actually is. I read the book in like 4 days! I was so intrigued by the idea of having hoarders for parents and her not following in their footsteps or picking up on their habits. I guess it is similar to children of alcoholics– we don’t all become alcoholics as well. More often than not we choose to be the opposite of our parents. The true beauty of this book and of Kimberly’s story is how time and time again she is willing to help her parents out of every tragic situation they find themselves in. She chooses to love and forgive them despite their evident flaws that have a huge impact on her own personal life.
My favorite part of the memoir and what I believe is the craziest fact of it all– Their hoarding got so bad at one point, they had a man living in their attic and they had absolutely no idea! Seriously. Read the book to find out more.
I rate this book 10/10.Beautiful Bodies. This book is seriously so good! I have recommended it to so many of my lady friends. It is the perfect book to read if you currently or absolutely ever have felt insecure about your body or paid way to much attention to your “diet” that it became exhausting. I am finally at a place in my life where I appreciate and accept my body for what is and what it isn’t. But, it is books like this that make you feel like you aren’t alone because there are so many girls out there who feel what you feel and do what you do to fit a certain image in our society. Books like this are what I owe some of my peace of mind to– in regards to my body.
Kimberly goes into detail about how her insecurities and habits started at a very young age and went on to persist in her life through out puberty, college, her career choice and ultimately her love life and meeting her husband. Like I said earlier in this post, her life story is honest and relatable on so many levels. This book is important for women to read.
Definitely read this book to understand where some of the pressure comes from to look a certain way but also, to learn how to not let these thoughts consume your life and take over your health and happiness in a negative way. Issues with our bodies and with the way society paints this misconstrue picture for us of what we should look like is something that sadly isn’t going away anytime soon. It can be hard to navigate that realm but their are people and resources out there for us ladies.
I rate this book 10/10.I want to thank Kimberly for taking the time and energy to share her life with the world. I am truly thankful that I found and read these books. I really hope she writes more books.
