Book: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Genre: fiction novel
I remember seeing the movie adaptation of this book, but I don’t remember the story. All I can remember from that day is how salty my popcorn was and my grandma refused to swap with me. Fast forward a couple of years, I saw the book at my favorite book store. I was curious, remembering the fact that I saw the movie without remembering what the actual story was. My then boyfriend refused to buy the book. “Just watch the movie again.” he said. We broke up a week after that. The second time I saw the book was at a thrift store, with my current boyfriend. We are trying to collect a different book series back then that is why I refused to grab the opportunity the buy the copy. I think I finally bought my copy last 2016, then remembering it again just the other month. Finally, I read it.
(Goodreads) The Lovely Bones is the story of a family devastated by a gruesome murder — a murder recounted by the teenage victim. Upsetting, you say? Remarkably, first-time novelist Alice Sebold takes this difficult material and delivers a compelling and accomplished exploration of a fractured family’s need for peace and closure.
I read the first chapter with enthusiasm. I know this may sound creepy, but I love the morbid description. I thought it was an exciting story, until I finished it. If you’re following me on Twitter or Goodreads, you might notice how slowly I went through this book. I mean, I am already a slow reader. I like the beginning until it started to drag. The only thing that kept me going was the fact that I was curious about what will happen to Susie’s family, especially her dad. I appreciate how Sebold portrayed each characters emotion throughout the book, but in all honesty, I don’t want to read it again. And that part about how Susie used Ruth, well I don’t want any spoilers so…if you read it. That part? Yes, I don’t like it. It felt like Ruth was raped just for the sake of Susie.
Will I recommend this book? Yes. People have different opinions, I want to see what they will think about this book. Was it worth the read? For me, no. But I am glad that I did.
I also watched the movie after reading the book. Funny thing is, I remember the icicle scene in the movie! That’s a good thing, I guess.
That is all for today! I am sorry if I rambled too much at the beginning, I just felt like sharing that. I hope you don’t mind. Did you read the book or watched the movie adaptation? What do you think of it? I would love to hear your opinion!
Thank you very much for reading and as always, I’ll talk to you guys on my next blog. Have a great day ahead!
