review 1: They say there is a first time for everything, and this is the first time I read a book by this author that did not delight me. I thought, Hey, I love trains, this should be right up my alley. But alas, it was not enough. Don't get me wrong, the book was not bad, but this is an author that has given me so much pleasure, the idea that one of his books could be merely so-so was startling. However, we are all human, and given the number of books he's written, it is kind of amazing how much I have enjoyed all the books I have read so far by him. As I wrote that, I realized that there were a couple of others along the way that put me off a bit, so maybe this is not quite the unique disappointment it seemed at first. But even parts of this book were good, so I'm sure I'll keep r... moreeading his books and hope that the current rate of good reads to slightly less good reads continues. But I don't recommend this one, I am sorry to say.
review 2: This story showcases Alexander McCall Smith's wondrous power of storytelling. Several people meet on a train and start to share stories of their lives to pass the time. My favorite was Hugh's spine tingling story of meeting his girlfriend Jenny or was that her real name...His narrative was in the best film noir manner. I also laughed knowingly at Kay's experience with a Catholic nun who thought her wicked and said that it was a good thing that the Good Lord Jesus and the Sweet Virgin Mary were said to be so forgiving, because she (the nun) would not be forgiving the poor child (Kay) in a hurry. Yeah, I've got my own experience with a Catholic nun...Reader Robert Ian Mckenzie's rich characterization added much to the enjoyment of these stories. less
