review 1: This is about four people on the train from Edinburgh to London. It was bought for me as a gift just as I was about to undertake that same journey, so it was a sweet and thoughtful present. But that's all I liked about it. It has the feel of a 5pm boxing day ITV drama, and the originality. I won't remember it longer than the time it takes to write this review. Some parts were hideously clunky, e.g.: They pretended to understand, but when it came down to it, many simply did not. They simply did not understand because they could not know - not really know - what it was like to be the other. That was because it was not them. That was why they could not think that. It had to be you.
review 2: This is about four over sharing types who are sharing a compartment on a
... moretrain from Scotland to London. I tried to suspend my belief that each person would share such intimate and long stories with strangers, because ERMGERD GUYS TRAINS! All the stories are about trains! And how trains have effected their love lives. Or something something romantic train stuff. The storytellers were hard to tell apart, and there is some reaction to each story by the other listeners so it is really confusing. The usual cues of language, tone and pace are all exactly the same so you aren't given any help. I couldn't remember who was who. In addition, the reactions to each other stories was pretty weak. I wish these would have been written as separate more traditional short stories. I know McCall Smith can do individual voices and has in things like 44 Scotland Street so not sure why this wasn't a more concerted effort here. On the plus side, this is short and TRAINS YOU GUYS! less
