Green Angel
review 1: Lovely is a word I cannot use enough to describe Alice Hoffman’s dystopian fairy tale of Green, a brave and resilient young woman who survives her loss of family, love, and community. If you enjoyed Green Angel, you will be pleased to follow Green’s rebirth with this sequel. Overcoming her heartache, Green has established herself as a resource for her rebounding community. Despite suspicions of witchcraft, many seek her help with the land and crops; but most of all for the power of her stories. Green records the stories of all and in each looks for answers to her life and loss. In the end, she finds that the power she needs to complete her healing is not found in others, but inside herself.
review 2: Hoffman wrote this after her readers pressed her to c
... moreontinue the "Green Angel" story. I'm so glad she responded, because this is a more hopeful conclusion to the story. The story itself is a fable/fairy tale. Negative reviews have called it simplistic, which might be the case plot-wise, but the language is perfectly Hoffman-esque. "But desire can drive you for miles. It can lead you in ways you never would have imagined. A map can be written in ashes, earth, water, air. Take a step and keep walking. Don't be afraid to look back. In the end, every path you choose takes you closer to what you've been searching for all along." With passages like that, does the story have to be complicated? less
