review 1: THE DOVEKEEPERS by Alice Hoffman (2011) is her first historical novel. I think some popular novelists reach a point in their careers where they no longer must write, but may choose to write. Marian Zimmer Bradley, after a career of pot-boiler fantasy wrote The Mists of Avalon. Dorothy Sayers turned her focus from Peter Wimsey to Harriet Vane. The Dovekeepers is Hoffman’s turn. It is long, lyrical, frustrating, and I could not stop reading her version of events leading to the slaughter on Masada nearly two thousand years ago, and how the story survives.
review 2: I enjoyed reading this book from point of view of four women who ended up at Masada. There have been factual shows about the seige, but nothing about how life was for the people defending the strongh
... moreold. I gained new insight about the practice of judiism at that time and all the superstition and the practice magic that at least the women of the story wove into their daily lives. It is almost inconceivable that women were treated so poorly without any rights of their own, yet they not only endured, but won some spiritual victories. less

A great, unputtable downable book. The author really did her research and it was wonderful to read.

I mostly thought this book was just too long and meandering.
