review 1: The story revolved around three sisters who shared a secret language and fantasy world in their younger years . This was all created by the older sister, Elv, who was traumatized as a child. This was alluded to as the very bad day but never totally Explained.. Elv developed many problems due to this and the entire family was effected by her decisions and behaviors. I really ended upEnjoying the book. The story flowed well, I felt for the characters problems, and enjoyed the descriptive writing.
review 2: I had been holding onto this book for some time and picked it at random to read on a recent trip. Alice Hoffman is a prolific author and while I have thoroughly enjoyed some of her books (Fortune's Daughter, Incantation, Practical Magic) there have been
... more others that just did not capture me enough to keep reading. At the start, it appeared that this was one of the books that would fall into the latter category. However, as I continued reading this novel caught me by surprise and finishing the book on the return trip left me sobbing in an airplane seat with tears running off my chin and trying to explain to the gentleman sitting next to me that I was not having a nervous breakdown. The Story Sisters are 3 girls, close in ages between 8 and 12 living with their mother who is dealing with a recent divorce that has left her hollow. When a "bad thing" happens to two sisters, they are tied together emotionally with a shared invented language used in an imaginative world that the middle sister can never truly share. Their mother never learns of the event that is kept secret and never talked about directly other than within the context of their imaginative world. Each girl has a fate that they must meet alone: one on a country road, on in the streets of Paris, and one in the corridors of her own imagination. The Story Sisters sifts through the miraculous and the mundane as the girls become women and their choices haunt them, change them, and finally redeem them. less

A little Lifetime-movie "isn" but a good escapist read. Ending fell a little flat.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as others written by Alice Hoffman.

It is a very dark story. I gave up after only a couple of chapters.

A very good and appropriate read during pre-Halloween October.
