review 1: Teresa Jane Fowler (nicknamed Twig because of her affinity for climbing trees and getting messy) is used to being alone. Her family lives isolated in their ancestral farmhouse where her mother makes locally-famous apple pie from their orchard. Her family carries secrets: an ancient curse from a brokenhearted witch, and a hidden brother who may or may not be the fabled Sidwell Monster. Over the course of one summer, Twig has her world shaken by the arrival of the Hall family, descended from the witch who placed the curse on Twig's family, who moves next door. This was a very delightful read coming from someone who's a fan of gentle middle-grade fiction. It would be a great pick for a more sensitive or dedicated reader. Alice Hoffman writes beautifully in her adult novels, an... mored her skill translates very well to juvenile fiction. I did find the ending to be rather rushed, and there's a twist at the end that isn't altogether convincing, but overall it was fantastic read.-Kelsey
review 2: I had actually forgotten how magical reading an Alice Hoffman novel could be. It is sweet, endearing and whilst the plot is rather sign-posted (even I suspect for the target teen readership) is in never the less enchanting. It’s gentle, sweet, non-scary happy ever after fare, but there’s nothing wrong with a little of that every now and again, is there? It doesn’t have to be doom and gloom, grim realism, and big scares all the time does it? And whilst I dare say most of its readers will be girls, as is sadly probably been the case with Hoffman’s adult fiction, boys should not be put off reading it. less

Adorable. The plot is fairly obvious but it is very nicely done.
