review 1: I "normally" do not like books that have a male main character... but I am slowly coming away from that trend. I loved this book. The MC's voice was just so sweet to me, his grief about his dad and his awkwardness around girls... I don't know, I have a think for geeky boys in pain, okay? Anyway, this is a very cute coming of age story about a young guy who is a techie in a school where theater is the place to be. He gets pushed around a lot, mainly because he is so quiet and non confrontational, but throughout the book, we have the pleasure of watching him grow into his own and it's a great story to read. I had a lot of fun with this one, although I was never in drama club or anything, I felt like I fit in with this crew.
review 2: At it's heart, this book is a
... morebout a teenager dealing with the loss of a parent, an unthinkable trauma. Without giving easy answers or being trite, the book tracks its main character through a highly entertaining adventure that sees all his preconceptions challenged. The high school theater "backdrop" is fun and distracting so you never become overwhelmed by the big emotions swirling in the hero's teenage head. Watching him grow and develop as an artist is really satisfying and the unexpected result of his grieving process combined with overcoming the crippling insecurity of being a teen. less
