review 1: This book is nothing but Twilight fan fiction and it's just as good as the original! Let's count the ways: The prologue has nothing to do with this book. It may pertain to other books in the series (I expect it's to show that Ara has the special vamp gene), but no one would understand because this story was more fluff than filler. Switching the Edward/Bella.... oops, I mean the David/Ara roles is fine, but keep it consistent! In one conversation, David went from wanting to turn her, to wanting her to grow old, to never wanting this for her, to wondering when she'll accept the unavoidable vamping! One conversation! And Ara is only slightly better than Bella. Several times I had to be reminded that she's a high school SENIOR! She's an obnoxious spoiled bitch who throw tantru... morems to get her way, then throws another because what she got wasn't what she wanted anymore! Also... keep the character consistent! I think Ara has scars on her face but no one but her ever notices or speaks of them. Suicide is often hinted at "if they go away". Holy crap! This is beyond emotional blackmail and straight to emotional abuse. It's fine that the author writes in Aussie, but then don't set it in the USA! Honestly confused me when the 4th of July was described but everything (including how the American kids spoke) was Aussie! Let the main character speak, think, dream, and describe things "Aussie style" but not EVERYONE! That also led to issues with continuity, I hope. Ara had started senior year during its second week... that's fall. But then she's asking for time...til the end of summer... to digest things. And David keeps reminding he'll be gone by winter. The US has opposite seasons from Australia. School starts in fall, let's out in summer. If you want to set a book in a country other than yours, great! But know SOMETHING about it! This book also failed to indicate any real amount of time passing. So it seems that these two people met, fell in love, swore to die if the other was lost, in a span of MAYBE two weeks. TWO WEEKS!!!And my biggest pet peeve of all when it comes to serial books: a sucky ending. A book, even a serial book, has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Introduce us, build up to a climax, wrap it up. This had a beginning and a middle! If I am generous, I'll allow David's revelation to be the climax. But you don't end it before anything happens! Threat of leaving: still there. Big bad Uncle: still unknown and dancing at edges of mattering. NOTHING HAPPENED IN THIS BOOK!! NOTHING! So many words to say so little! Hell, even Mike, the sleep-over and the benefit concert HAVEN'T HAPPENED!I won't be continuing the series, not a chance!
review 2: Wow pretty much sum's up this book and the ones that follow. I had not heard of these books at all until last week, it popped up on a list of recommended books to read and i just thought i would give it a go. I bought this book on my kindle Thursday night and i just could not put it down! Finishing the first book within a couple of hours, i straight away bought the next 3 and sleep went completely out of the window for the next 2 days lol. The main characters, David and Ara are simply beautiful and there were a few times during the second book that i found myself actually shedding more than a few tears. It is easy to empathize with the characters, and these books will leave you smiling, laughing and crying through out the journey of the story. I am now dying to read book 5 and am praying its not too much longer before its released. Totally a must read and would suggest them to anyone. Definitely worth a 5 star rating. less
