Ladies of Lantern Street
review 1: I was captivated by Amanda Quick’s, The Mystery Woman. This is a second novel about the Ladies of Lantern Street series. Quick brings to the forefront a plot rooted in crime, passion and the paranormal all within Victorian London. We are introduced to two strong and dynamic protagonists. Miss Beatrice Lockwood, our female protagonist, meets life’s challenges head on. She redefines herself as a paid companion working in an attempt to hide her secret past and her paranormal abilities. In carrying out her duties she is pulled back into her past life as she crosses paths with Joshua Gage, a man with secrets of his own. What starts out as an adversarial relationship transforms itself through the perils they both face against the occult and the deadly Bone Man. Althou... moregh part of a series this novel can be read independently.
review 2: The arguments, many of which I have heard before, for the existence of ESP versus subconscious interpretation of things seen without being consciously noticed is well presented in arguments between Beatrice and Joshua throughout the book. I like the way Beatrice responds to events and conversations. She is mature, somewhat amused, and rarely speaks without thinking. Impulsive she is not. I thoroughly enjoyed her take on each situation that arises and her willingness to ignore Joshua's interpretation when it didn't accord with what she knew. I also appreciated that sex did not come into it until a reasonable amount of time had passed in their getting to know each other and that it did not usurp the events of the book. In other words I did not feel that I needed to skip over large parts of the book. In fact, I didn't skip any, which is a rarity these days. Some writers I have stopped reading altogether, because, having skipped all the superfluous sex scenes, I discovered I had skipped over a third of the book. What's with that? Editors, take note. At any rate, Ms. Krentz has never had this problem, thank heavens, which is one of the reasons she is my favorite living author. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. less

There is not a shred of literary value in this book, but it was fun to read.
