review 1: My local library wrapped several books up in brown paper, taped vague descriptions and bar codes on each and offered them up as "Blind Dates with Books" for February. On a lark, I selected this one, thinking it was more mystery than romance. It turns out to be both: a witty paranormal Victorian romantic suspense tale. Apparently there are also futuristic and contemporary stories by the same author, all involving the same mysterious and shadowy organization, though this story stands on its own.I found this tale to be reminiscent of Gail Carriger's Soulless series (though Carriger's world-building is more absurd, and so was a bit more flamboyantly delightful to me). There's no steampunk element or nonhuman characters here. It's simply a nice mystery with a lot of psychicall... morey talented folks in Victorian London... and some hawt sex scenes between two sympathetic and bull-headed characters. (Heads up: heteronormative, cisnormative, all white, etc, though minimal obnoxious class stuff going on considering the time period, and the gender relations are not near as essentialized as they could be.)
review 2: The botanist and the private detective team up to find a poisoner before Madame Good-With-Poisonous-Plants gets the blame herself. Except for one fun little twist at the end, everything about the mystery is very obvious, but the fun isn’t in any sort of twisted thriller, but in watching things play out exactly as you want them to: sex in a creative place, check, B couple squabbling before falling in love, check, badly phrased proposal, check, bad gut getting his comeuppance, check. There is something to be said for sometimes reading something where everything is exactly as you want it to be. After all, a little certainty in an uncertain world is sometimes appreciated. less

Not one of her best Arcane novels, but her worst is still superior to the highest from most. :)
