review 1: Adelaide Pyne and Griffin Winters are drawn together by the Burning Lamp. Griffin is a crime lord in Victorian England and Adelaide always dresses as a widow in deepest mourning and leads raids on brothels that specialize in corrupting the innocent. She leads to the young women to a place where they can be safe and learn a respectable trade. The two make a strange pair but if Adelaide cannot learn to control the Burning Lamp Griffin will become insane and die,a result of the workings of an Alchemist ancestor. They deal with the problems that come their way and work towards the necessary happy ending.
review 2: Setting: London, turn of the century; Theme: two very different people – crime lord and social reformer – who connect, and meet their destiny hea
... mored on…Characters:Adelaide Pyne: strong dreamlight reader; strong woman; at15 her parent’s killed, put in orphanage, sold to brothel, confronted by Mr. Smith – who wants her to have sex wither & then work a dreamlight lamp, she puts him to sleep, and escapes to America (with the dreamlight lamp that seemed to call to her, where ultimately she joins a wild west show and invests her money well; when the time feels right, she returns to London with the lamp; she establishes a school for women, to train and encourage and finance their abilities to take care of themselves – and then she raids brothels (uses her talent to put the guards to sleep), and gives the women (many still teens) a choice to go to her school; Griffin Winters: crime lord with ethics (we never see him commit or sanction any type of crime); strong shadow talent; parents died when he was young, and he ended up on the street, where he grew up to become a crime lord – no drugs or prostitution, but violence where needed; tried marriage once, but his obsession with making a place for himself kept him away from her, and his obsession for her safety left her in the company of his best friend as her guard – and they fell in love… he is convinced that he is succumbing to the Winter’s curse, with hallucinations and nightmares – 2nd talent emerging – waking nightmares he can bring on to others; he takes most payments for services provided for an unnamed future favor – by which he gets the name of Adelaide from the Arcane Society record and approaches her for help…Latrell: Griffin’s enemy – they have truce; but Latrell working to take over Griffin’s area, doing Mr. Smith’s dirty work in trade for smith’s enhanced crystals, that enhance one’s psychical powers; Mr. Smith, aka ? member of council of Arcane Society: wants Nicholas Winters’ lamp & dreamlight reader to make him invincible, and after stealing lamp (killing Griffin’s parents who were unexpectedly home) and killing Adelaide’s parents and the brothel owner – he manipulates to gain access to Adelaide… he is stuck 12 years looking for ways around the lamp and for another strong dreamlight reader… overjoyed when Adelaide returns to London;Summary:On the surface opposites – crime lord and social reformer… but in all other way, very simpatico – similar tragedy’s in their youth, strong willed, strong talents… He tracks her through her raids on brothels… and requests her assistance… bonus when finds out she has the lamp… she very logically thinks through what she observes, what he tells her… and she concludes he isn’t getting new talents, just extensions of his talent – and via the lamp, and their intuitiveness, she centers the energy he supplies to the lamp… and restabilizes his psyche... of course, passionate, almost uncontrolled sex follows… Along the way, her life is threatened – Smith wants her,, and is sending Lytrell’s thugs to kidnap her, so Griffin keeps her with him… his hideout is attacked (crystal enhanced thugs), but they escape through a secret passage and then they take on the thugs… they back track and see how the past is playing itself out in t and he present… Griffin and Jones uneasily work together… hence why their great grandchildren know each other in book 1)- the women become friends. And once the bad guys are defeated (by their own greed), griffin gives up crime lording, and they go too San Francisco, to her house, to start a new life… I wish I paid more attention to book one’s mention of the left over energy of Adelaide and Griffing… hmmmm less
